Mondo Bongo Released February 1981. Highest UK chart position - No 6.
Following on from the heady success of The Fine Art of Surfacing, Mondo Bongo signalled a new approach combined with some older influences for the band. The new approach was a move away from the guitar-driven, New Wave sound that had featured so prominently on the band's earlier albums. The older influences included a rare cover by the Rats - a version of the Rolling Stones classic Under Their Thumb with new lyrics by Bob Geldof. Only two singles were released in the UK - Banana Republic and Elephant's Graveyard - but unusually, these were accompanied by a number of single releases in other countries but NOT the UK.
